Tahnee & Norman in the new Spring 2012 Orlando Weddings Issue!

Norman and Tahnee were one of our 2011 couples that were truly near and dear to our hearts. We met with this couple a year before their wedding date and set out to plan an awesome, memorable, chic and modern wedding day. Tahnee wanted to have her Filipino and Haitian culture represented, Norman wanted to have his African-American roots represented. Together we were able to design a day that was a reflection of their personalities, their heritage and the beautiful spirits that they are. This week we will highlight a few parts of their wedding process!

Pantone Reveals Color of the Year for 2012: Tangerine Tango

Last week Pantone announced its 2012 color of the year! the color is Tangerine Tango! Pantone describes Tangerine Tango as "a spirited reddish orange that provides the energy boost we need to recharge and move forward." Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute® describes the color as:

“...sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it. Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.”

With the color orange growing in popularity and acceptance with both consumers and designers. Tangerine Tango will be appealing in fashion, cosmetics and design; these three elements being are an integral part of wedding planning process! We are certain you will see that translate to all things weddings over the next year!

Wedding Guest Etiquette: Your Mother, Your Boo & Your Friend Too!

It has been INTERESTING as our clients have received RSVP's for all of their upcoming nuptials the last few months. We were amazed at how many of the brides have had to gently turn down invited guest's attempts to add uninvited guests to their wedding guest list. One of our recent couples had to turn down a guests request to bring along their mother, friend and a new boyfriend. Remember this is an intimate moment for the couple; as someone they love and cherish, you have been invited to bear witness and be a part of that day. Be mindful of that and RSVP for the persons listed on the envelope only.

Remember there are a variety of expenses associated with a wedding or special gathering. To accommodate your request they are taking on additional expenses for someone they don't know. Not to mention, you have placed the couple in an uncomfortable position to have to call you to let you know your extra uninvited guests will not be able to attend. It's not just the cost of the food to the couple, but the additional chairs, linens, favors and alcohol. Another factor to consider is the venue or locale may be restricted on the number of people they may have or their funds may be limited or committed to other expenses as they start their marriage. Not to mention many couples trim off family members and other dear friends...yet, you want to impose a stranger on them so that you can bring along someone you may be familiar with? Instead look at the wedding as an opportunity to meet new people, make new friends and share in a very special time for your friend.

Real Weddings: Cynthia & Paul 09-11-2010

Last summer, we received a call as we were traveling to South Florida for the 4th of July holiday. Cynthia and her fiance, Paul, were planning their wedding and hoped to get married on the beach in September. After reading our blog, Cynthia had fallen in love with Costa d'Este Beach Resort and was determined to have her destination wedding there. With one phone call, their location was secured and planning began for their ultra chic and uber sophisticated beach side wedding for Saturday, 09/11/10.

Costa D'Este sits on beautiful Vero Beach. The hotel is owned by Grammy Award winning artist, Gloria Estefan, and is really a South Beach meets the Hamptons type of location. The great thing about the ballroom at Costa is it has beautiful built in LED lighting and glass chandeliers that resemble air bubbles under the ocean. Our floral designer Andres Aguilar, with Mystique Flowers, incorporated seashells, hydrangea, orchids and lily's to create a chic beach event! With 40 of their closests friends and family, the weekend was an unforgettable time filled with great food, dancing and ambiance. We had many favorite moments during this wedding weekend. The day started with a seaside ceremony and guests went on to enjoy some cuban flair during cocktail hour. The dinner reception was held in the ballroom with tableside ordering which meant guests did not have to pick an entree before the wedding day.

With the help of Solutions Bridal, Cynthia was able to find a dress that would be available within the 2 month time frame we were working in. Here are a few photos from the day. Our wedding team included:

The First Look: Why You Should Consider It.

Hello Joie de Vie Family!

We have been busy over at the office as wedding season is in full steam. We have been fortunate to share in some of the most beautiful moments with our couple. This year we've experienced more of our couples taking advantage of having a private moment many call a 'First Look'. Simply explained, the 'First Look' gives the bride and groom an opportunity to see each other before the ceremony. For most of us that are extremely traditional this may seem a bit taboo, others may say it is bad luck and moreover many are just uncomfortable with the notion as it is not something you normally hear about. Well, from an planner's perspective, it truly is a beautiful moment for many reasons:

1. It is still the first time the couple will see each other on their wedding day.

2. It relieves any anxiety or nervousness the couple may have as they are able to see each other and enjoy that moment privately.

3. It is a great photo opportunity that your photographer can stage with your videographer, florist and planner. It gives ample time to take bridal party photos so you don't feel constrained by time and travel if you are going from one venue to another for ceremony and reception.

One of our January couple's (pictured below) had this experience and we remember getting the call after the wedding where the bride said she was so happy she decided to do that. The couple used that quiet moment to pray with one another and take in the events that were unfolding. Last night we were able to take watch the video from their wedding day (this will be featured in an upcoming Real Weddings post!)

Now if you decide the first look is not for you, there is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with that. If you believe it is something you would wish to experience, contact your wedding professionals (wedding planner, florist, the venue, photographer and videographer) to appropriately plan out the best location for this special moment that you will relish for the rest of your lives!

With Fashion Week underway, Pantone has released the colors that have inspired the looks we will see on the runway. Runway colors and looks typically translate into bridal colors for all you planning a wedding next spring. The spring selection of colors offers many great options and opportunities to combine colors that will truly set the tone for your wedding. My favorite color combinations are starfish and tangerine tango or granita and vintage!

Real Wedding: Malaun and George 10-30-2010

Despite the heartaches that may come with life, often times a sad period in life becomes the pathway for destiny. Meet Malaun and George one of our October 2010 couples. Malaun's father had passed away a few years ago and her Aunt Lori decided she was taking her sister and niece on a trip to the 2009 "All Star Basketball Weekend" in Phoenix! The purpose of the trip was to help the ladies have a few days away from the sadness of losing a wonderful husband and father.

Little did Malaun know that the trip would begin the pathway that would lead her to the man to whom she would make lifetime commitment. George was at the All Star Weekend because of Orlando Magic Point Guard, Jameer Nelson. Jameer's mother had briefly chatted with the ladies at various points during the weekend and one day they all ended up having lunch together. George stood out to Joy (the bride's mother) and Lori (aunt) because, 'He was so simple, not flashy and he wore a beautiful cross around his neck'. After a long lunch conversation with the ladies, Malaun and George exchanged numbers. And so began a long distance relationship between Philly and Chicago.

George and Malaun picked Orlando for their destination wedding. It was one of their favorite vacation spots and they hope to one day move to the sunshine state! After the first phone call with Malaun, last spring, I knew this would be a special wedding to be a part of. "Love Will Light The Way" became the theme for the wedding. Lori happened to be in the northeast on a trip and found beautiful white lanterns that fit the theme perfectly. As Malaun would tell me on our conference calls the ladies (her mother and Aunt Lori) were in full force planning, making the transition for Malaun who had now moved to Philadelphia an easier one. The couple, Joy and Aunt Lori flew down for a weekend and we hit the ground running. With her venue, the Omni Resort at ChampionsGate, selected we were ready to select our great team of vendors to make this dream a reality for the ladies and George. The requisite was simple: Fun, memorable and elegant.

From the design of the event, thanks to the fabulous Tommy Murphy at Greenery Productions, we were able to incorporate elements important to the ladies to make the event stand out! From floral, to cake, to photography and videography - everyone was on board to get the major parts of the planning done that weekend. By Sunday a great team of professionals was assembled!

All of the guests, with the exception of two or three people were from out of state and they all assembled for a beautiful wedding weekend filled with laughter, tears and a great time. You know its a great wedding when every guests is still in the room when the house lights go back up. The bride was escorted down the aisle by her brother in her first dress. This dress was the dress her mother loved. Malaun's mother described this as the princess gown. The lanterns went with the theme and lit the path the couple took to one another.

With the festivities taking place the night before Halloween, the couple wanted to ensure the children would have an opportunity to 'Trick or Treat'. The bride's aunt and mother brought down bins after bin of blue and silver candies. I believe the adults enjoyed the candy bar as much as the children did.

Our bride's second dress was a beautiful, chic and modern off the shoulder gown. It was the gown the bride wanted to wear. Hair and makeup remain unflawed, thanks to Lena with Lena G Creative!

We've been busy over at the Joie de Vie Planning Studio, but we're never too busy to learn about new options for our couples! Imagine our delight to learn that Urban Outfitters, Inc. (the parent company behind Anthropologie, Free People, Leifsdottir, Terrain and the Urban Outfitters brands) announced the debut of their wedding brand BHLDN! The line made its official debut on Valentine's Day. We received this email a while back:

Pronunced 'beholden', BHLDN wants to help create an extraordinary experience for brides to share with their family and friends. The Anthropologie creative team began dreaming up a wedding brand after hearing tales of its customers' nuptials. Pantone's Fall 2011: Everything Old is New and Improved!

The Must-Have Color Trends for Fall 2011 were released yesterday and it is truly an exciting palette of colors!

"Designers take a painterly approach to fall 2011 by artfully
combining bright colors with staple neutrals, reminiscent of
how an artist would construct a stunning work of art,”

Here are the colors for this upcoming season.

With purple being my favorite color (unbelievably to many...it is not turquoise), I was excited to see the shade of purple "Phlox" on the palette. One of our very fashion forward brides actually selected this color for her fall wedding at the Buena Vista Palace! The one thing I truly love about the color is it can be paired with so many colors and tones and still be very sharp and classy. This year is our purple year over at Joie de Vie as many brides have walked in the door with a shade of purple in their palette!

Here is a snippet of what they had to say about the new color "Phlox":

Phlox, a magical, deep purple with a hint of mystery, is an outstanding
statement when worn on its own. Add Phlox to this season’s neutrals
to create a bit of drama, or combine it with Cedar, Deep Teal or Coffee
Liqueúr for something extraordinary. To add even more excitement, pair

Let's Toast It Up! Three Premium Champagnes For Your First Toast.

The ceremony is done, post wedding portraiture complete... IT'S PARTY TIME!

Many look forward for the moment of the toasts from your honor attendant and best man. What will be your beverage of choice for that toast? There are so many great options to choose from and your venue or caterer will have many standards to select from for your guests. If you would like to have that one unique element again - get a special bottle of champagne for you and your fiancé for the toast and to sip on through the evening. These options put the luxe in luxurious champagne selections - making them three of the best to select from in the world:

1. ARMAND DE BRIGNAC CHAMPAGNE (aka The Ace Of Spades Champagne).

When nothing less than the best will do, Armand de Brignac Champagne is a great choice. This selection was the number one champagne in the world in 2010. It is described as "a seamless fusion of elegant artistry and bold innovation." The champagne is smooth and creamy in taste and has an underlying freshness to it. It has been praised as being classic in style but perfect in drinkability because its ageing capacity is not compromised.

The Armand de Brignac champagnes are a blend of three grape varieties, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. They are harvested from the Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards of the Cattier family in Chigny-les-Roses, a tiny village in the Champagne region of France.

There are three champagnes to select from:
1. The Brut Gold, which is their flagship champagne. It is packed in a gold bottle.
2. The Brut Rosé is a pink champagne that is bottled in a pink-gold bottle.
3. Blanc de Blancs is a champagne is pressed from a selection of white chardonnay grape. It is a limited-edition variety of Armand de Brignac is also available in small quantities. They age this variety in oak barrels. Because it uses the chardonnay grapes exclusively, it brings out its vanilla, caramel and buttery aroma. It is bottled in an antique silver bottle.

All of labels for each bottle of Armand de Brignac are made of real pewter. The labels are polished and applied by hand and then the bottle is packaged in a black wooden gift box. "Le Rare" is cellar aged for seven years and is comprised primarily from Chardonnay grapes with some Pinot Noir. This is Champagne fit for the king and queen of the day (aka the bride and groom). How did you get started?
After graduating from UCF's Rosen College of Hospitality Management, I moved up north to pursue a career in New York, CT doing event planning. I worked for a non-profit planning community events to recruit foster parents and then moved into wedding planning that is where I found my passion. I found that doing these events gave me a great sense of fulfillment, but I wasn't particularly fond of the New York winters, and decided to relocated back to sunny Florida. I returned to Florida in 2007 and founded the wedding division at Big City Catering. I'm thankful to have found a "home" and a place that I am able to utilize my talents and abilities to the fullest and always continue to grow.

What professional organizations or industry networking groups are you a member of?
I am currently a member of NACE, the National Association of Catering Executives.

Furthest place and/ or interesting place you've travelled to while working on a wedding assignment?
After moving back to Orlando, I had one more wedding planning to complete in Connecticut. It was late October and a fall themed event. Autumn was in the air with seasonal decor such as pumpkins, gourds, apples floating in barrels, and the most beautiful colors in the trees that you have ever seen. It was picturesque.

What are a few suggestions you would make to couples as they are selecting a professional in your service area for their special day?
We highly recommend that every bride consult the services of a wedding planner. Having a history in wedding planning, I really value all of the things that a planner can do for the bride. From reviewing contracts, creative design and most importantly, SAVING THE BRIDE AND GROOM MONEY, we try to get each bride to consider the importance of having a planner in their corner. When it comes to the menu, I suggest that every couple customize the menu to both formal plated to buffet, tropical to seasonal, themed or traditional, we can provide any type of food!

What are some important questions every bride/groom should remember to ask their event caterer?
Can I customize a special menu? Have you worked at my venue before? Can you show me pictures of events that you have done at my venue? Can we go over everything included in the contract? One of the most overlooked items on the contract in the timeline. Make sure that the catering timeline matches your vision for your special day.

What are some important questions every bride/groom should remember to ask their special event caterer?
Can I customize a special menu? Have you worked at my venue before? Can you show me pictures of events that you have done at my venue? Can we go over everything included in the contract? One of the most overlooked items on the contract is the timeline. Make sure that the catering timeline matches your vision for your special day.

What are the trends and innovations in your service area?
The late night food tend is really popular. Whether it is sliders and french fries or liquid nitrogen ice cream. It's always nice to provide tour guests with a little surprise after dinner. A lot of our clients are opting for themed menu stations like Asian, Mexican and Mediterranean all on the same menu. The meal is like a trip around the world.

What are three favorite blogs besides the Joie de Vie blog?
I follow Blue Planet Weddings about green, ethical and eco-friendly weddings, one of my favorite authors Jen Lancaster, and when I need to laugh I stop by Tacky Weddings.

If you weren't working in the industry, what field would you be in instead? Why?
I would definitely be a CSI. It was my original major in college until I realized that chemistry is not my strong point. I love all of the detail work figuring things out by following the clues. Maybe a detective would be better!

I LOVE survivor. Someday, I'll be on that show!

Girl Scout Cookies: Help a cause with a great treat for your guests!

I love, heart, scream for and indulge in Girl Scout Cookies. One of my colleagues daughters and the troop at my church sell the cookies every year and it's always a pleasure to support these future 'Girl'preneurs as they raise dollars for the many causes the Girl Scout Council supports. Well you can do the same for your event as well. The great thing with Girl Scout cookies is you can buy them now and freeze them until you need them throughout the year.

Here are a few ways you can use them:

1. Guest Welcome Bags. I always encourage my couples to have welcome bags if the budget permits. Glassine bags can be used to pack 2-3 cookies to include with the welcome bags you are providing to the hotel. What a nice snack for someone who just drove in or has been flying for the last 3 hours!

2. Cookie bar anyone? Everyone has had popcorn bars, candy bars, pie bars, sweet treat bars and cookie bars... A Girl Scout Cookie Bar would be a nice touch. You can either add it to your sweet table with all of your other 'childhood' favorites or make a full Girl Scout Cookie Bar. No worries here as there will not be a cookie left (trust me). [side note: be sure to have the small tongs for the guests to pick up the cookies from you trifle bowls, apothecary jars and containers you are placing the cookies in]

3. Are you having an after party? A display table with many treats and snacks can include the Girl Scout Cookies as well. Your chic, swank and slammin' after party just went to another level with the cookies.

4. Favors as the guests leave at the end of the night. I love having a table in the hall or near the exit that is visible to guests as they leave. We've created custom signs with a nice message along with the favors for guests to pick up as they leave. Ask your venue or caterer if they can get you little bottles of milk or cartons of milk (taking it back to your school days). Place the milk in a nice container of ice and have the cookies in glassine bags with a custom label as seen here:

At the end of 2009, I was truly honored to be approached to take part in Wish Upon a Wedding Central Florida. I realized that this organization would be the first of its kind to grant wedding wishes from the wedding industry! In Loving Memory of Wish Recipients who have Passed On

Dani and Tony married in St Louis on September 1. She passed away September 30th. Dani had suffered from Cystic Fibrosis since age 3, and had recently received a double lung transplant.

Florence and Micheal married near Sacramento on March 13. She passed away on September 28. Florence battled stage IV breast cancer, and was diagnosed with six months to live at the time of her wedding.

Shelly and Jay married in Seattle on May 2. Shelly passed away three weeks later. She had been battling a rare type of cancerous lymphoma, and Jay suffered from Multiple Sclerosis.

The Cost When a Wedding Guest Pulls a "No-Show"!

As a wedding guest, you have a responsibility to your host when you answer an RSVP with 'Yes! I'm attending'. In the last three weeks we have had two weddings and a corporate event for our Joie de Vie Clients. One of our weddings had a guest list of over 200 attendees. Once our guests were seated for dinner, my staff and I do what we normally do, collect the remaining escort cards and go to the tables to ensure that the guests are in fact not at the table. Sadly, the couple had more than 10% not show up for the wedding.

What does that mean to you as a guest? Well you've actually caused that bride and groom to spend money that could have been used for a guest that they had to cut out of their list. They also have now paid for a variety of services and items they can’t now be refunded for. To have 20 people not attend means they could have saved the following:

$3092 in Food & Beverage (assuming $89 for the meal $30 for the bar + service charge +taxes)
$ 250 for linens (chair covers, napkins, overlays)
$ 80 for stationery (printed programs, menus, place cards and table numbers)
$ 200 for centerpieces
$ 60 for favors
$ 80 for the cake
$ 100 for welcome bags (if they were expecting you to stay at the hotel with the room block)

That all totals out to at least $3862 or $193 per person attending the wedding. That is $3862 that the couple could have kept in their savings, upgraded their floral or applied to other services or items to ensure they had a wedding they wanted.

Be considerate of an RSVP. If you have an emergency beyond your control, it is simply that an emergency. IF, however, you realize you can't attend, try to give the bride and groom enough of notice so that they are not in a position where they've missed the deadline to adjust their numbers with their venue. What you may not realize is that many venues and caters have a time frame in which numbers can only be increased after the guarantee is made. Just the same a specialty linen company, stationer and florist have cut off times to meet production requirements. Take a moment to be considerate. Would you not want the same consideration?

Every Fall & Spring the world gears up for New York Fashion Week. As event planners, we keep an eye out for this report as it truly sets the tone of colors for the upcoming season. Your major bridal houses will use this palette for bridal fashions for your bridal party and accessories. The new report for Spring 2011 Report gave a kickstart to Fashion week last week and the colors are absolutely stunning!

For the last seventeen years Pantone has surveyed New York designers and experts to bring us the color trends for the upcoming season. The Spring 2011 report is appropriately called: Spring 2011 – An Exotic Journey.

Here is an excerpt from the newly released report: Citing exotic destinations like Africa, India, Peru and Turkey as inspiration for spring 2011, designers continue to satisfy consumers’ need to escape everyday challenges with intriguing color combinations that transport them to foreign lands.

"The colors designers have chosen for the spring season present an interesting marriage of unexpected warm and cool tones," said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. "By cleverly combining complementary colors, those that are opposites on the color wheel, they have created a striking intensity to the palette. These unique color combinations make it possible for consumers to pair existing pieces in colors traditionally associated with fall, with new favorites to punch up springtime wardrobes."

September 11th: A Day of Remembrance

Nine years ago, the world stood in silence stunned by what had happened in the early hours of Tuesday, September 11, 2001.

I was still working as a Benefits Consultant and was working in Naples, FL. I for one believe everything in life happens for a reason. Our client was a chain of hotels in Boca Raton and Naples. The clients' Health Insurance Company representative was in Naples instead of the World Trade Center that day because our benefits enrollment was delayed two weeks. His colleague took over his New York schedule that day - an assignment in the World Trade Center. Minutes before the plane struck he realized he had no cash and stepped out of the building to get cash from a nearby bank. That need for cash caused him to not be inside the building when the first plane struck at 8:45 a.m. Just the same, a fellow School of Business Industry graduate walked in for her first day of work in one of the Towers - she was fortunate enough to make it out unharmed. The stories of those who woke up late, got stuck in traffic, decided to call in sick could go on and on...yet sadly many did not have that story to tell.

Many lost their lives that day. Many became heroes that day. They are gone but definitely not forgotten. I've learned that no one is promised tomorrow: We must live, love and enjoy each day with purpose and with no regrets. We must also learn to cherish our family, our friends and our loved ones. Life is too short and quite unpredicatable! Let's remember how important we are to each other!

Should I Have A Cash Bar At My Wedding?

Should you have a cash bar to minimize your costs? I've been asked this question a few times over the years. Well answer this, if you invited your friends and loved ones over for dinner, would you ask them to pay for every drink they had? Hopefully not, hence a cash bar at your wedding...should not be an option!

Instead, opt for a limited bar, beer and wine, specialty drink, a bar during cocktail hour and after dinner. Talk to your caterer or banquet manager at your venue to see what cost effective options you can consider to help with that cost. You may even consider cutting your guest list, reevaluating other parts of your budget...or no bar at all. Happy planning!

Engagement Shoot: Tahnee & Norman

Our clients and couples at Joie de Vie are truly special to us. We take the time to get to know our couples as we help them plan one of the most important days in their lives. I met the groom last year and he was excited as he told a few of us about his engagement plans for the end of December. He searched for the perfect ring, and each time he spoke about his then girlfriend, his eyes lit up! Meet Tahnee & Norman one of our 2011 couples!

We started working with them at the end of January and it has been nothing but absolute fun. The bride always strives to tastefully, but daringly push the envelope. What I love about how she's allowed us to sit with her and truly design an event that is unique! Next year's event is sure to be one for the books as we've got some great floral concepts and designs that will please the eyes and the senses. The couple had seen each other on and round the campus of their alma mater UCF (University of Central Florida) but did not officially meet until 2007 and have been inseperable since.

When they selected their photographer, they picked the UBERfabulous Jennifer Werneth in Orlando, to capture their wedding day as well as their engagement images. Tahnee and Norman had one stipulation, their baby boy (all 160 pounds of him), had to be a part of their engagement photos. Dallas is the couples beautiful Great Dane and he is tall!

Why Hiring A Professional Makes A Difference (Part 1)

As an event planner, rarely do I get the opportunity to sit as a guest at a wedding. This year I've been a guest at three different weddings (typically it's one wedding per year that I attend as a guest) and it truly gave me an opportunity to really sit back and observe. I was able to observe the guests, the vendors and the newlyweds. Now mind you, we do that when we're working, however, to sit back and truly observe without minding a timeline and the details really is reassuring to me when I tell my clients: HIRE PROFESSIONALS!

To help you understand why I am saying this, I will post a few blog posts over the next two weeks about hiring professionals. I want to provide you with examples of a few things that occurred. All three weddings were beautiful and the couples were truly endearing.

Disclaimer: For those that follow me on twitter, they were able to read a few of my random tweets. Those tweets kept me from getting up and putting on my planner hat as I was determined to remain a guest. Also, the vendors I will mention below have not and will never work with me!

Professionals know and understand their equipment and resources. I had to start with this point because of the photo below.

Do you see that blob of light in the upper left hand corner of the photo? That is a light that the videographer placed in the ceremony. Sadly my photo is a bit small, but if you look closer you will also see a tripod right in the middle of the altar. Yes, that tripod was left there the entire ceremony. The same videographer, also hopped into the middle of the aisle during the recessional. That is great, he's capturing their exit...with one exception. He was walking backward up the middle of the aisle...IN FRONT of the photographer!

Now while looking at this photo consider the following:
1. All of the photos will have this blaring light that the photographer has to either edit out or compensate for while shooting. How difficult will it be to edit out that tripod?

2. The photographer was not able to capture a great exit shot. Typically a videographer and photographer have a conversation before the ceremony to sort out logistics of where they are shooting and how NOT to get in each others shots, but it appears as though this photogrpaher and videographer did not have that important conversation. So should I think the videographer does not understand the vendor teamwork dynamic? All of the vendors have been paid to provide a service and each vendor should be mindful of the other vendor present and vice versa.

3. All of the guests have their hands on their forehead as though they are saluting the Colonel to see the ceremony because this blinding light blocked their vision.

4. The videographer was using the latest and greatest cameras which more than likely has a great zoom feature in the lens. Why did he not use the zoom? His presence was very distracting and took away from what was otherwise a very beautiful ceremony. This videographer did not understand his role in the vendor dynamic; he took away from the photographer as he's been paid to capture a moment on film just as the videographer is being paid. Both vendors are equally important.

As you sit and begin selecting your Photographer and Videographer, ask important questions to ensure they understand the importance of the vendor dynamic:

Questions about how they are communicating with the other vendors. If its a photographer or videographer, ask how the manage to work with the other vendor to ensure they are not messing up the other vendors frames. Do they contact the other video/photographer?
Have they worked with the videographer or photographer you are considering?
Look at their photos or video to see how they are shooting. Are you able to see a second stationery camera in their video?
What kind of equipment will they use? Can their equipment shoot well in low light?
How many cameras will be used? Are they manned or stationary?
Have they worked at your venue/venues before?

If you are working with an event planner, they will facilitate that communication so that everyone knows what is happening. There are no 'do-overs' on wedding day. Recapturing the moments as they happen is an important detail that can't be left to a video/photographer stepping into the other professionals frame.

Orlando Wedding Magazine: Premiere Issue hits the stands!

Real Wedding: Althea + Jason 4-2-2010

One afternoon we received a phone call here at the office from a groom; that is not typical, as our initial inquiries are mostly phone calls from the bride, or the mother of the bride. The groom asked great questions that would make any fiancee proud! I later learned that the couple had gone out to visit the Buena Vista Palace Hotel and Spa and wanted to select a coordinator that would be able to manage their wedding day. Despite their hectic schedules with their respective companies', they wanted to handle the many details for the wedding on their own. Fortunately, our day of package includes worksheets and a timeline that helps them stay focused and on task with the planning. Their wedding plans started out as an intimate affair for about 80 people but by wedding day they were closer to 100 guests over the Easter Holiday Weekend.

Although Althea and Jason live in Orlando, their families and friends live outside of the central Florida area. They wanted to ensure their guests would have a memorable experience. With the help of Angela Bachelor, they were able to select the rooftop space of 20Seven at the Buena Vista Palace. Althea's family is originally from Guyana, so naturally a few traditions such as black cake, were incorporated. Greg Dillon (Photography by Greg) captured the details from the wedding day and the couple and their invited guests had a phenomenal evening overlooking beautiful Downtown Disney.

Althea and Jason took on a major project for their wedding: designing and printing their stationery. Everything turned out beautifully. The bride also made a special entrance by coming down the elevator in the atrium. Her descent provided for a beautiful yet dramatic moment.

One of my favorite photos from the wedding is definitely this one of the bride's bouquet. A cherished bracelet that held special sentimental meaning was attached to the bouquet and it completed her look as a bride. It simply said "Believe". As she walked down the aisle she could feel the charm on the bracelet against her fingers. e

Come Discover Love: A Destination Wedding Gem right here in Florida!

As one of the top three destination wedding locations in the United States, Florida truly has some hidden treasures an options for those planning a destination wedding. At the beginning of May, 40 event and wedding planners were invited to attend a special three day event. The Indian River County Chamber of Commerce planned an event that was designed to introduce us to the Treasure coast. This destination locale has miles of beaches, rivers, nature preserves and citrus groves. As a native Floridian I was surprised as to how diverse Indian River County was and with it being less than two hours away, it's a great hideaway for those wanting to plan a wedding in away from home, but in your own back yard.

Three beautiful properties Costa d'Este Beach Resort, Vero Beach Hotel and Spa and Disney's Vero Beach Resort hosted our stay. I stayed at Gloria Estefan's Costa d'Este and talk about a bit of South Beach meets central Florida charm! Unfortunately, my arrival was masked by a deluge of rain. As soon as I was greeted in the lobby I could smell the incense which totally changed my mood and I 'relaxed'. Once I opened the door to my room, there was a lovely plate of Cuban pastries and a shot of Bustelo Cool...talk about a great welcome!

My itinerary was full of activities for the next three days and I was excited to get on with the program. Over the 3 days we visited several destination wedding options which can fit many personalities, travel needs and aesthetics. Whether the bride is bohemian chic, traditional, trendy our outside the box...there is a locale for you in Indian River! The best way to describe Vero is it's our version of the Hamptons. In NYC you would drive North 2 hours for the Hamptons, in Orlando...you need only go one hour south!

I can go on for days and days about the options, however, images truly show you the beauty found in Indian River. Below are a few photos from beautiful sites and options available; I have to thank Nathalie Cadet-James & PS Photography for the beautiful images. During the first full day of our tour, we visited the had a fantastic lunch experience at Costa D'Este. All of the floral designs were created by Andres Aguilar and his team at Mystique Flowers in Miami. The floral designs were truly inspiring. I love when designers look to push the envelope in their designs.

Our final night closed with a true South Beach-styled fete! The pool area of Costa d'Este was converted into a fantastic party spaces with lounge furniture and clear tables and chiavari chairs. Regretfully, there was a high chance of thunderstorms. Fé Domenech's event team (The Event Firm), the staff at Costa and a few of the the planners attending the event quickly went into B-Plan which allowed us to see the same design in two different spaces.

The same concept worked beautifully by the pool as well as in the enclosed spaces and ballroom.

As a professional event planner, I can't say how great it is to be around your colleagues and talk about the industry and its trends. Aside from visiting the locales, we were treated to great speakers that help set the pace for our industry. We had lunch with Grace Ormonde (Editor in Chief of Wedding Style Magazine) and Susan Moynihan (Editor in Chief of Destination Weddings Magazine) on the second day and brunch with Rebbecal Grinnals (one of the foremost experts on the business of Destination Weddings and Honeymoons. She is the Founder and President of wedding and honeymoon industry consulting firm Engaging Concepts).

Lunch with Grace Ormonde was ended with a great surprise! We all received her newly released book as a gift from the Chamber of Commerce (and what a gift! The book itself weighs over 10 pounds). Grace took a moment to speak with each of us and sign our books. This was a must have for my library that I had planned on picking up that week. To meet Grace and have her personally inscribe the book was priceless!

As a member of the Association of Bridal Consultants, I am one of the local co-directors that gets to plan our monthly networking meetings. Every June we plan a "Showers Of Happiness" themed meeting that benefits the local Habitat for Humanity Office. Our members in the area attend the meeting and bring 'wedding shower gifts' which consists of appliances and gift cards that Habitat for Humanity can utilize for the homes being built in the area.

Last summer our meeting was held at the Rosen Plaza Hotel and with the help and design inspiration of Tommy Murphy of Greenery Productions and Rashida Erskine from BBJ linen we were able to design a shower themed event that was truly beautiful and unique. Rashida suggested a great reversible linen that had just been released by BBJ while Tommy utilized parasols to add a twist to the traditional centerpiece! Robin Simmons and her staff at the Rosen Plaza created a custom menu for the luncheon that was fantastic! We had color splashed onto the sheer draping by the hotels AV team, to create rain clouds to add on to the shower themed event. Imagine my surprise to see the photos featured on the BBJ Linen website a few days ago. Below are a few images from the day. Tell us a little about your business and the services you offer: The name Yanman started as a fun play on my last name, yet in just a short time Yanman Photography has grown to mean quality workmanship and photographic excellence. We offer a full array of Wedding and event photography, from a half day to week long coverage, we can handle it all. In addition to photography we offer albums, professional prints, canvases, save the dates, thank you cards, and much more.

How did you get started in the Wedding Industry? I starting taking pictures many years ago, more years ago then I will admit because that would give away my age, and I’ve always felt from the time I was born that I was a photographer. After many years of just taking pictures for fun and to please only myself, friends and family suggested that I try my hand at professional photography. For a few years that involved models, travel and sports, but it wasn’t until I shot my first wedding that I found my true calling. Weddings are every-changing, non-stop, adrenaline filled, once-in-life time events. Anyone that really knows me knows that I’m always on the go, and can barely sleep. So from the first wedding I shot, I knew that I would never stop, six years later I still love every one that I go to.

What professional/industry organizations are you a member of? We are members of WPPI (Wedding & Portrait Photographers International) and the Local Pictage Users group.

Furthest place and/or interesting place you’ve traveled to while working on a wedding assignment? While working on a project for a west coast hotel for their high end wedding marketing, I went to Newport Beach California. We got to work with engaged couples, married couples and even a famous TV model. (Ladies please …)

The craziest thing you’ve ever done to get “THE SHOT”? My team and I go to great lengths to “Get the shot”. I’ve gotten into fountains with pants rolled up and climbed up a ladder to get shots of a bride and groom that wanted to do their formals on horseback. But my favorite story involves one of my associates; jokingly I said “this would be a much better shot from the top of that tree”, five minutes later and from 15 feet up, he had the best view of the couple and a great shot.

What is your signature shot? The shot we are currently using on our trade show marketing, the one where the groomsmen wrote “Help Me” on the groom's shoes it is the one everyone recognizes right now.

What are a few suggestions you would make to couples as they are selecting a photographer/photojournalist for their wedding? Ask to see an entire wedding day story, either in a completed album or on-line. While everyone likes to see best of shots, it is important to see a completed product before deciding if a photographer shares your style.

Your thoughts on ‘first look’ photos or bride and groom photos prior to the ceremony? I love when couples take time out for themselves on their big day, the pictures taken when a couple chooses to break tradition and see each other prior to the wedding are often the best of the day. This may be the only time they get alone on their wedding day, and the joy of the moment really shows in these type of pictures.

Your thoughts on the importance of a coordinator in the vendor team dynamic?
It is so important it is to have a day of wedding coordinator. A coordinator makes every other vendor's job easier on the big day. They help keep everything running smoothly, stress free and on-time. Less stress equals more smiles and better pictures.

Something you would like to see couples do more of with their wedding photography? Simply put “use them”. All too often I hear of couples that “only want the files on a CD”. There is nothing wrong with getting the digital files from your wedding, but what are your plans for them? All of our packages include professional prints, and we highly recommend getting an album. Other options we offer include, canvases, pre-loaded digital picture frames, pre-loaded iPods and iPhones, and much more. The reason you have professional pictures is to display them, not leave them in a drawer to gather dust. (Kerline's side commentary: I would have never thought of a photographer offering the preloaded iPhones and iPods - it makes sense to take that option).

What are a few trends and innovations you have seen in the industry? The biggest trend in wedding photography right now involve additional portrait sessions. Whether it is an engagement session, bridal portraits, bridal boudoir, or trash the dress these portrait sessions offer the opportunity to add a unique set of images to your images.

If you weren't a working in this industry, what field would you be in instead? Why? I love finding a different way to look at things, and capturing them on film. I think if I could magically have any job I wanted, I would want to be a major motion picture, Hollywood director. There is no telling what I could do with a two hundred million dollar budget.

What would we be surprised to learn about you? I was born legally blind in one eye. My family thinks that looking at the world with one eye is why I have an “eye” for photography, since I view life as if it was though a single lens everyday.

Any hobbies or pastimes? It might be a bit cliché, but am fortunate enough to have turned my hobby and my passion into a career. When I have a free moment, instead of taking pictures of happy couples, I am chasing our two-year-old to capture every moment of her life.

Wedding Professional Wednesdsay: Olivia Gale (The Zebra Room)

One of the more beautiful moments at a wedding reception is the first dance between the bride and groom. With all of the hustle and bustle of the day, it is one of the many firsts that a couple will share as husband and wife. Oftentimes, couples get nervous and excited as they begin to consider the many options available to them. As a couple selects the song for their first dance, they often think of many options regarding the music: Should their selection be traditional? Contemporary? Their favorite song as a couple? Or should their selection be something completely out the box?

One of the leading dance choreographers in the area is Olivia Gale with The Zebra Room. Olivia has helped many central Florida couples choreograph their special dances for their wedding day. We are happy to feature Olivia as today's Wedding Professional Wednesday vendor. I hope the Q&A will help you learn a bit more about wedding day choreography and how to make it unique yet memorable. Gale took an afternoon to tell us about herself and her services!

What are a few suggestions you would make to couples plan/choreograph their first dance? I suggest a couple find a song or songs that express who they are as a couple and expresses who they are individually. It is a very special way to connect and share that magic moment with their family and friends.this is a moment that will never be forgotten and believe me there are times in their first dance that will move their audience to tears and to joyful laughter.

The first thing I do when a couple comes to me is use their music to teach them the basics they'll be using within that framework. Before I even begin working on the foot pattern, which is usually based on a basic box given that most music they'll be using is 4/4 time, is to establish their foundation of solid frame. Without a solid frame the man can't lead and the lady can't follow. To repeat a phrase from "Dirty Dancing", "This is your dance space and this is my dance space", no spaghetti arms allowed. I continue to reinforce that foundation throughout e

ach lesson. I then teach them "the box", the box rotating and an underarm turn. If the couple is able to learn more in that hour I teach them more dance elements they'll be using when I begin to put together the choreography. I tell them it's all about the rhythm and not about being stuck in a box. There are many combination's of moment that only require walking. That opens up a whole new dimension of possibilities. During the first lessons I'm asking questions, getting to know the couple and finding out what they are trying to accomplish during their first dance.

I tell my couples that a first dance should be approximately 3:00 minute

s in length. I joke, you want to have your audience wanting more not looking at their watch hoping the end is near. I pack a lot into that 3 minutes and want to elicit the full gamut of emotions from all concerned, from laughter to pulling on the heart strings eliciting poignant tears. It is my goal to help them realize they can do so much more than they can imagine, to show them off to their best advantage and show them how much fun it all can be.

Popular dance styles or options for the first dance? Anything goes these days. I can even edit two songs together with two different dance styles; one a bit more serious and then moving into something completely off the wall and fun. Most songs are 4/4 time and can begin with the basic box and move out of that into combination's of movement that as I say "break out of the box" and look impressive but can be fairly simple to accomplish. I've had couples choose everything from the Tango, Rumba and Cha Cha to something more jazzy and even hip hop type style to finish off. Being a choreographer and accomplished in many dance styles I have a lot to draw from to give the couple anything they need to reach their goal.

How far in advance should they contact your studio? What would you suggest the minimum number of classes be? I usually suggest 3 to four months in advance to give the couple plenty of time for practice and take into consideration time that is needed for all the other preparations associated with getting ready for that special day.

What are a few trends and innovations you've seen in first dances for the reception? Wedding first dances have become a very exciting trend for the couple and their families and friends to share; it's become a really special part of the wedding reception. I'm excited to see that couples find it's a very special part of their wedding preparations to learn to dance with each other and additionally exciting for me to see that it can become a very special way to connect as a couple. It is an activity they can enjoy beyond the wedding. It has the potential to become a very special part of what they share as a couple their entire life. It is a healing touch and loving touch! Dancing is something to share together with the added plus of being a way to have fun and stay fit.

If you weren't a working in this industry, what field would you be in instead? Why? I'm a dancer, choreographer, actor and entertainer. It’s all connected. I love working with wedding couples. It is a very special and creative way for me to share what I love with so many amazing people. We all laugh and sometimes cry together; it is such a joyful experience.

What would we be surprised to learn about you? Many would be surprised to learn that that I'm both a poet/writer and artist. I like to draw people rather than landscapes or still lifes. I'm also published writer in national dance magazines like Dancer in Miami and Dance Teacher and Dance Spirit out of NY.

Many couples are now considering the services of a professional dance instructor to ensure that their first steps are as flawless and smooth as their wedding day has progressed. Many of our Joie de Vie couples have opted to have choreography for their first dance. We had a couple take salsa lessons to pay homage to the bride's parents favorite past time, while another couple took lessons so that the groom's uneasiness about dancing in front of his guests would be lessened. It will be fun, a special time for the two of you and an opportunity to truly entertain your invited guests.

Wedding Photo Of The Week: Father Escorting His Daughter Down The Aisle

As a wedding planner, we are typically the last one to see you before you walk down the aisle solo or with a parent. In that moment, we adjust your bouquet, make sure you are picture perfect and give you a final reminder to enjoy the day! The photo above is too fabulous for words. The photographer snapped a story in this one frame.

I can never stress the importance of having a great photographer as a part of your wedding professional team! Once the day is over, your photos and video are the pieces you will show for the rest of your lives. I have a new feature here on the Joie de Vie blog called "Wedding Photo of the Week". Simply put, it's a photo that I fell in love with while perusing through some of my favorite photographers blogs and/or websites. The photos featured will speak for themselves, however, I will tell you why I love them.

Our fist featured photo is from the fabulous Ross Oscar Knight. Ross is an international photographer based out of Atlanta. This photographer is amazingly talented and the photo above was taken this past January. The couple had an unforgettable destination wedding weekend in the city of Antigua, Guatemala with 65 of their closest friends and family. Their intimate celebration, was held in the ruins of an 18th century Cathedral. They wanted a ceremony that would perfectly blend both of their American and Guatemalan cultures. The photo is the bride entering the cathedral with her father. What a special moment that must have been! What is even better is that the photographer snapped just the right picture at the right moment. Definitely one of my favorite's!

Tell us a little about your business and the services you offer:
Couples work hard to make a wedding original and I work hard to capture it that way. Using pictorial photojournalism I strive to bring a style that is documentary and outside the box. I am passionate about creating images people might not expect.

To really take advantage of the documentary style most of our packages include unlimited coverage, so we can be there from the beginning until the end of the wedding day.

Pilster Photography not only tries to tell the story different, but the company philosophy is to be different in every way. We are always looking for creative ways to be outside of the box from our photos, to our marketing material and we love to work with other creative and industry professionals who are looking to do the same.

How did you get started in the Wedding Industry?
I've had a passion for photography since I really discovered it in high school. When I first started I was already trying to make a business of it. I would shoot photos of the football team and sell them back to the parents. In 2002 I graduated with a degree in photojournalism from San Jose State University and ran across the country chasing my dream of being a newspaper photojournalist. Over the years I held three photo internships and regularly freelanced.

After freelancing for a few months in St. Louis I ended up in Florida at the daily newspaper in Daytona Beach where I was at for six years. With the turmoil in the newspaper industry it was time to switch gears.

I found a passion for weddings when I planned my own. There were also some times while I was at newspapers that I photographed weddings on the side or on assignment (Two renaissance weddings and a wedding where they left by 7 John Deere tractors to get to the reception). When the time came to choose where to head next it seemed like weddings were an easy choice. I continue to do some editorial work, but weddings are 90% of my income and where I do all of my marketing.

Furthest place and/or interesting place you've travelled to while working on a wedding assignment?
Key West, I just got back from it and I'm definitely available if anyone wants to book another wedding there! I'm still working on booking my first international wedding, but I don't think it's far off.

The craziest thing you've ever done to get "THE SHOT"? Most of my extremes have come during my editorial shoots, but recently during an e-session I saw this great puddle that I laid down in to get the shot. I just haven't had the right wedding situation, but for editorial shoots I've mounted a camera on my road bike, shot out of the back of an airplane as skydivers jump out, climbed to the top of a rock wall to shoot down, put a camera in a fish tank and half-submerged it underwater all in an effort to make something different and I'm sure there is more I haven't thought of.

What is your signature shot? In other words if someone saw a particular shot they would immediately relate it to your company. The best way to describe it is "not your typical wedding shot." That's usually the first thing people say to me when they find Pilster Photography. The direct quote goes something like "I love your work because it's not like everyone else." I like to capture a lot of information into one photo. Many times you can find layers of action happening.

What are a few suggestions you would make to couples as they are selecting a photographer/photojournalist for their wedding? Look at a few weddings on photographer's blogs. Anyone can put their top photos in a portfolio, but to constantly keep good photos on a blog is a difficult task. This will give you the best insight into how the photographer shoots on a regular basis. Look at the portfolio to see the best that they can do.

Look at one of their album's from a wedding. This will also give you an idea of their style and if it carries over to the album design.

If photography is a high priority for your wedding you should find a photographer that you are passionate about their work and their style. They should also be passionate about what they do.

Look closely at indoor photos. This is the biggest tip on how much experience someone has. Is the light really harsh on the bride and groom with the background dark or black? Or is it even all around? You can also ask your photographer if they know how to bounce flash. The answer should be yes.

Photographers who enjoy making photos outside of work tend to make better photos on the job. Ask to see some of their non-wedding work.

Don't be afraid to tell a photographer what your budget is and what your priorities are with your photography. This will give them the best opportunity to try and work something out, especially if they seem beyond your range.

Remember that you are making an investment. Most things on your wedding day will be long gone, but you will still have the photos. These are what you are going to be showing your kids and they will be showing their kids.

There are many lists out there with a lot of the same questions on them of what to ask a photographer. Most of these are a list of basics that even amateurs will be able to answer yes to. Many times you will already be able to weed the pros from the amateurs out by setting your standards high when you look at portfolios. Another thing to look at is if they are a full-time photographer and if they are supporting themselves off of it. They may be inexpensive, but if they can't manage to pay their bills, then they may not be around when it comes time for your wedding.

Also ask open ended questions and find out who they are as a person and where they have gained experience. Find out what type of photos are their favorite to make. Look for red flags or areas that you might clash with them or that their inexperience might show through. "What is your background?" "Why do you think you'd be the best photographer for my wedding?" "What photography do you do on your personal time?"

Your thoughts on 'first look' photos or bride and groom photos prior to the ceremony? I am very laid back about it. I explain up front that the wedding day will be hectic and there won't be a lot of time for portraits. Also, if it's an outdoor wedding in Florida, most makeup and hair can take a beating before the pictures. If outside the box portraits are important to them, then they should strongly consider seeing each other before the ceremony. It will be a lot more relaxing and you can schedule enough time to really make some cool photographs.

If this does happen we need to still work on making it special. That first glance when a groom sees his bride in her wedding dress can never be repeated.

Another opportunity is to do a "Day After" session (Sometimes called "Trash the Dress," although you don't have to be that extreme in the portraits). This is a day where the bride and groom get dressed back up, made back up and have more time to make relaxed and cool portraits.

Your thoughts on the importance of a coordinator in the vendor team dynamic?
I love working with coordinators. A coordinator holds the world together on the wedding day and makes sure it runs smoothly. This means less stress for the couple and especially a photographer who is shadowing them.

No matter how prepared you are there is going to be something that needs special attention on a wedding day. This is not something that the couple or their guests should be bothered with, this should be a day for everyone to relax and just let it flow.
I planned my own wedding, so I'm familiar some of the the work a coordinator puts into it. I am also happy to work with the coordinator's and the couple to come up with ideas that will produce better opportunities for photos.

Something you would like to see couples do more of with their wedding photography? Give it time. I'll spend two and a half hours with a couple during an e-session to make amazing pictures and really get to know them. Realize that great portraits don't usually happen in a few minutes. It also helps if you brainstorm with the photographer and tell them things that make you happy. If it's butterflies, the place you met, or something that you and your fiance do together, it can help make the photos that much more special.

Another thing is to have your wedding photography in an album, get a framed print or get a canvas. It seems like a lot of people just want a photographer to shoot their wedding and give them a DVD. At least with myself I find that DVDs sit on shelves. Even if I say I am going to make prints, life always seems to get in the way.

A quality album brings an elegance to your wedding day and something you can hold. I have an album from my wedding day and it sits on our coffee table or a bookshelf. It's really easy to bring with me someplace or show it to people. By having your photographer do it, you're not going to forget about getting it or procrastinate about it getting done.

What are a few trends and innovations you have seen in the industry? Video and stills are starting to become more integrated. As still digital cameras start to produce high quality video the combination of the two is becoming more common.

I think with the internet things move a lot quicker. When it used to take years for a trend to come to light, it's only taking a few months now. Ideas spread quickly and some people follow the pack while others scour for new ideas. Some trends are also dying down as quick as they come to light.

I'm seeing different styles of portrait sessions, such as a boudoir session as a gift for the fiance.

DVDs are becoming standard. I don't think I had one couple come to me this year and not ask for a DVD. This can be bad in some ways. There are many companies out there offering cheap photography products and it can degrade the quality of good photos when the images are reproduced on these. Many photographers have done a lot of research to find the best vendors for reproducing their work and will go to many lengths to make sure the client has the highest quality product.

Canvas prints are becoming popular. Prints on metal sheets are starting to catch on.

Coordinators have become a necessity and not just a luxury.

A trend that I think is coming is complete wedding week coverage. With family in town you want it all documented. I'm already being asked to cover more rehearsal's and rehearsal dinners. Day after sessions are also become more common.

If you weren't a working in this industry, what field would you be in instead? Why? Editorial Photography. Making pictures is my passion. I recently had an opportunity to explore what I'm doing and possibly change careers, but I could not see myself doing anything else. I tried looking into PR and personal training, but neither of them held my interest like photography does. Photography gives me the opportunity to explore and experience things that I might otherwise never see.

What would we be surprised to learn about you?
1. Most people are surprised to learn that I used to weigh 255lbs in high school. I lost most of it in college.
2. Florida is the second longest I've lived someplace since I grew up in Northern California.
3. I was ready to marry my wife the day I met her.

RSVP Tips: How to track your responses like the pros!

Many of you have started the process of selecting your wedding invitations. After taking the time to select your gorgeous invites, prepare yourself for the RSVP's! A few brides find this process a bit daunting; however, you can take a few steps to make the tracking process a smooth one. You can definitely handle this like a professional or with the assistance of a professional: Your stationer and/or your wedding planner!

Here are a few ground rules to remember before mailing your invites:
1. Create a spreadsheet or utilize an RSVP notebook and get an index card box to track your RSVP's. Get Married, The Perfect Wedding Guide & Brides.com also have great online tools to help with tracking.
2. For your spreadsheet or notebook: use the columns to categorize the invited guests, their date/spouse, child(ren), address, and meal choice.
3. The box is your 'back up file'. Divide your box into three sections: Just In, Yes and No and then store the cards alphabetically (by last name). The Just In section will contain RSVP's you receive that have not been recorded. Once recorded they will move into the Yes or No section.
4. Take all of your RSVP cards and lightly number each card (1 through however many number of RSVP cards you have). If you do not take anything away from my tips, remember this essential tip: number your cards. Why? Someone will forget to write their name on the card, someone else will write in hieroglyphics and you'll be able to easily track who has not returned their card.
5. As you start to address your cards, you will look at the number on the back of your RSVP card and assign that number to your invitees. Assign the number on your printed guest list as you actually stuff the envelope.
6. If you have a wedding web site, you may opt to allow RSVP's to come through the site. Remember to include the key information that you've listed on your RSVP cards. The great thing about RSVP's via your web site is you have a tool that will encourage promptness in the responses from your guests.

The RSVP's will start to trickle in. I know a few of our brides get excited and typically shoot a text or email that says "we got 3 today". Don't obsess on updating your spreadsheet daily. Instead have 2 designated days a week to do this. That way it is not overwhelming or tedious.
If you are spreadsheet savvy, you can set your spreadsheet up to tally up your yes's, no's and meal choices. That spreadsheet will be like gold as you start to take care of your seating and place cards.

Do not fear the word "NO"! The truth is we are all on a budget. There is no such thing as a budget-less wedding. With that said, do not fear telling Cousin George that you invited him, his wife and child...not the entire neighborhood! If you get an RSVP for more than you anticipated, you can put it to the side and make that phone call to politely explain that, "...unfortunately, we can only have so many guests, we would love for you and such and such to be there, however, we can only have the three of you." Also, if people are trying to RSVP days before the wedding day, it is OK to say NO, unfortunately it is too late to accommodate them. Why should you allow them to stress you out days before your special day. If they truly cared and wanted to be a part of your day, they would have been mindful of the RSVP deadline.

Tell us a little about your business and the services you offer: We officiate weddings for couples that want a custom crafted wedding ceremony. No two couples are the same and so it is our feeling that no to ceremonies should be the same. We try to make all our ceremonies very personal to the couples with whom we work.

How did you get started in the Wedding Industry? Well being a minister since 1989 I have always loved working with couples as they prepare to enter into married life. Performing weddings is about ministering to the couple in such a way that we can help them get a good start in married life.

What are a few suggestions you would make to couples as they are selecting an officiant for their wedding? Find someone who will listen to you and let you make your wedding ceremony, YOUR ceremony.

What are some unique ideas have you seen incorporated into ceremonies recently? I love the “Warming of the Rings” ceremony. Couples pass their rings to their family members for them to send their best wishes or blessings to the couple. This is a great way to connect with your guests.

In cases of inter-faith ceremonies, can you provide us with examples as to how you were able to incorporate different faiths/beliefs? I have worked several times with a local Rabbi to perform services like these. Also, many faith beliefs have rich traditions that we can incorporate into the couple’s ceremony.

Are you a blog reader? If so, what are your three favorite blogs besides the Joie de Vie blog? I read a few, but nothing on a regular basis. Most of the time I look for blogs on topics that I am studying personally. I love to read some of blogs from fellow wedding industry leaders. They, like you, usually have their finger on the pulse of changing trends in the wedding industry. What is the best photo stance, colors for brides-maid dresses, wedding words, etc..

If you weren't a working in this industry, what field would you be in instead? Why? I love working with senior adults. Every week I volunteer and preach at a local retirement community. They have so much left to give, but there are so few people who will take time to listen to them. I think of them as “my girls.”

What would we be surprised to learn about you? I do triathlons, open water swims, and marathons. I may not be the fastest, but I’m like the Energizer Bunny. Sidebar: Now, this shocked me! "Rev. Glynn the athlete", lol!

When not working on a wedding, what are your favorite pastimes? Spending time with my wife and 3 kids.

Tips On Choosing Your Color Palette

The colors you choose for your wedding day set the style and tone for your entire event. One of our first planning meetings with our Joie de Vie Weddings & Events' couples is to determine the overall aesthetic they would like to have. Think of your color palette as you select your attendants attire, your decor, the cake, favors, flowers, the details, table linens as well as your invitations! Choose colors you love, but also consider the following:

What mood do you want to create? Your colors contribute to the overall mood of your wedding. You want drama? Add vibrant colors. If your leaning more towards romantic, consider soft colors.
Where are you having your ceremony and reception? Choose colors that compliment the setting. Pay attention to existing decor, furniture and the carpeting to ensure they don't clash with the colors you select.
What time of year are you considering for your wedding? The season may also effect the colors you select. There are great resources you can lean on to see what colors will be in season for your wedding.
Are there cultuaral traditions you will need to consider? Color can effect our moods and emotions but they also hold special meaning in different cultures. You may have to include specific colors to various parts of your ceremony, so consdier colors that will compliment that specific color.

Consider The Special Needs Of Your Guests!

You have planned this special day in your head ten thousand times over and it is going to go as planned. You've thought about the aesthetic and the mood you want all of your guests to walk away with. Well what if your guest has a disability or special need? Consider the special physical, mental and dietary needs of your guests as you plan your day as well.

While helping our clients plan their Central Florida weddings and events, we always ask about guests that have special needs because we believe that is an important element to keep in the back of our minds as we are planning with the client. Joie de Vie recently had a wedding where the special needs of a guest had to be accounted for. Special seating had to be arranged to ensure that the guest was comfortable and able to enjoy the wedding day as well. First and foremost, you don't want that guest to feel that their disability is a burden. I always tell my couples to make their guest list before they start looking at ceremony and reception locations for their wedding. As you look through your guest list, take a moment to consider if any of your guests have any special. A few things to consider or ask:

Will the table be a comfortable height for them?
As you start to visit your location options be sure to ask the venue whether or not there are accessible walkways, restrooms, and seating available for the specific need of that guest.
Will the room configuration permit for them to enter and access various parts of the reception room easily? You want to be certain that you leave extra room around the tables to ensure ease of access.
If they are not in a wheelchair, but have a physical disability also look at the chairs. Know and understand the weight limit on banquet, chiavari or folding chairs. You may have to have a special seat brought in to accommodate the guests specific needs.
If your meal service is not plated, how will they access the food stations or buffet?
Are the restrooms equipped to meet their needs.
If the ceremony and reception are at the same location, consider how the transition will take place from ceremony to cocktail hour to the reception. Be certain that the guest will not have any trouble with the transition.
Location of a power outlet in the room is also important. You want them to have easy access to the power should they need to recharge the batteries on their electric powered chair.
What hotel accomodations will be needed for guests with special needs? Because of the ADA most hotels have the rooms properly built to meet those needs. You want to ensure that your rooming options reflect that.

Central Florida is fortunate in that our wedding professionals have great experience with accommodating guests with special needs. As you speak to your vendors other than the venue, it will be important to ask about how the guests can be seated in the ceremony area, will access to the dance floor be easy, the position of apparatus for lighting or sound and your photographer may have to consider how he/she will position those guests for portraits.

If members of your bridal party have a special need, you should also consider how they can partake in all of the bridal party duties on the day of the wedding. Look at your ceremony altar space to ensure there is enough room to accommodate for wheelchair(s).

Of course, you will only know the needs of your guests that you've listed. If your guests are bringing a date, it is possible that you will not know what their needs are. If you are uncertain of what those needs may be, utilize your website to list information about guests with disabilities or have options for special dietary concerns. Also consider letting them know that they can contact you directly to address any concerns. More importantly, communicate with your planner, venue and vendors regarding the special needs to ensure that all of your family, friends and loved ones have an unforgettable experience on your wedding day.

Orlando Perfect Wedding Guide Bridal Show in Two Words: Absolutely Amazing!

My legs are like jelly right now, however my fingers have absolutely no problem typing. Joie de Vie Weddings Events was one of the participating Wedding Professionals in the Perfect Wedding Guide show today and it was spectacular! With over 900 brides attending the show, it was definitely a busy five hours in the ballroom at the Orlando Hilton.

As usual it is always great to see my colleagues and fellow Wedding Industry Proffesionals showcasing their skills, talents and services. Although I've worked at shows for Brides Against Breast Cancer or the Association of Bridal Consultants, this was the first time Joie de Vie Weddings had a booth at a larger show. I wanted to share with you a few images of our booth. This show featured 186 vendors and over 1000 brides plus nearly 2000 other guests. Needless to say there were a bunch of people in that room!

Because we have working relationships with great vendors in the Central Florida we were able to tap some of the "BEST OF THE BEST" as we pulled together the details for our booth. Playing on the Tiffany Blue theme colors of our company we designed a very modern and chic display area for the showcase. We had many vendors, brides and the guests of brides snapping photos of the details in our booth. I have to give a special thank you to my treasured vendors:

Pantone Fall 2010: Fall's Fantasy

It's Fashion Week! Twice a year the experts get together to showcase the Fashions for the upcoming season. Well Bryant Park is full of color this season and it always looks to the Pantone Fashion Report to determine what colors will set the tone for the season. The Fall 2010 report was just released and you will certainly see these colors transformed into wedding fashions. Your brides maids dresses will be available in many of the colors released on the report.

PRACTICALITY sets the tone for the color palette this season. Leatrice Eisemen (the Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute® said that they were mindful of consumers’ need for practicality but they also understand that the consumer wants something new. The designers are offering options that allow us to extend and embellish our wardrobes this fall.

Photofetti: Unique Idea for Your Wedding!

I recently had the opportunity to listen to Darcy Miller in Palm Beach. Darcy briefly told us about a product that would be featured on the Martha Stewart Show. The product she featured was confetti made out of photos! Darcy mentioned a few ways the confetti could be incorporated into the wedding events. I immediately thought of weddings from my childhood when we would toss rice as the newlyweds exited (yes, I remember that far back ;>). The confetti is a real update to an old tradition!

There are various places you can get the confetti and two of our favorites are Photofetti and Custom Labels 4 U. Photofetti (pictured above) is a great way to add a bit of flair and uniqueness to your wedding day. All you have to do is send them your favorite pictures (up to 10 photos) and select your 3 coordinating colors for the solid colored confetti's and you have a unique item to set your day apart from the rest. Custom Labels 4 U is a bit different. I love the fact that they still incorporate your personal photos(pictured below), however, they also have fun shapes that can be linked to your theme or destination.

Here are a few ways you can incorporate the photo confetti to your wedding day:

Prior to the wedding- Create a save the date magnet or postcard and include a few drops of the photo confetti into the envelope. When your invited guests receive their save-the-date, there is a nice surprise that will fall out of the envelopes. One of my favorite daily reads, Creature Comforts featured Lisa Rupp's design of a Save the Date which is similar to what I am suggesting.

During your showers or special luncheons- Utilize the confetti on your tables.

For the wedding- Place the Photo confetti in glassine bags that your guests can toss at you as you walk up the aisle after your ceremony. You will have to find out what the clean up requirements are for your venue. You especially need to find out if there is an additional clean up fee associated with doing this.

During the Reception- If you are not including candles in your decor, this would be a great option to have shot off in a confetti cannon during your first dance, or during some special part of the evening.

At the end of the night- a great send off and photo as you exit your wedding reception. There are biodegradable options for your confetti too! Below is confetti you can purchase online at Beau-Coup!

Photo confetti is a great alternative to making your wedding day or special event more a memorable affair. Years ago we would toss seeds and rice, now we have more options to make an old tradition modern yet classic. The Wedding Library Bridal Show at the Breakers.

On Sunday the 17th, we took a day trip down to the Breakers in Palm Beach for a very special bridal show hosted by the Wedding Library. I joined fellow colleagues Karry Castillo, Melissa Patrick and Elizabeth Mahon for what was truly a great day of listening to our industry experts (Martha Stewarts Weddings Darcy Miller, Photographer Donna Newman, Badgley Mischka designers Mark Badgley & James Mischka, Cake Diva Sylvia Weinstock and Kleinefelds' Randy Fenoli) inform the brides on the latest trends and the key things to remember as they plan their special day. Also in attendance was Style Me Pretty Blog's Abby Larsen! The highilight of the day was definitely Kleinfeld Bridal giving away a $5000 wedding gown shopping spree to one of the lucky brides.

The Design Studio at the breakers had us all snapping away with our camera's in the mini lounge that had different tabletop displays with many inspiring ideas.

There was also a VIP Bridal Luncheon where the Breakers Sommelier, Virginia Philip presented to the guests. Check out the tables in the photo below. Definitely a new take on chic and modern. The damask pattern is a part of the glass on the table.

We had great seats at the fashion show. The fashions were breathtaking. I could literally blog for a week on the various fashions that were showcased by Kleinfeld's. (hmmm not a bad thought, I just may do that on my favorites from the show).

The highlight for me was definitely having an opportunity to chit chat with Randy Fenoli from Kleinfeld Bridal. Randy has designed a suit that will debut with the Kleinfelds Mens Formal Wear line. What I especially loved with the suits is the tailoring is very European with a great bonus on the inside of the Jacket...a zipped pocket! No lost rings on wedding day!

Haiti's Earthquake! Please say an extra prayer.

I am not posting my Wedding Professional Wednesday post today. I've pulled it and will repost next week. If you know me, you know that I am a VERY PROUD HAITIAN-AMERICAN. Despite the fact that I was born in the states, I have a deep and profound love for the country that gave my parents life. I am in tears as I see the news of its capital and the heart of the country destroyed by a natural disaster that will take a very long time to recover from. I pray and I still have hope that the Haitian Diaspora and those back in Haiti will rise from the dust. We have family members, friends and loved ones that are still unaccounted for but I still hold out hope.

Below is a video that I've loved for years that truly is poignant at this time. It is called Pou Ayiti (For Haiti) and it just talks about how we've forgotten about Haiti and more importantly we've forgotten about her importance...We have not forgotten!

How can you help? Pray, have hope and if you can make a monetary donation, please make sure it is to a 501 c(3) like the Red Cross or Yele Haiti. Both of these organizations are allowing you to text your donations.

I’m primarily a wedding photographer, but I also do a lot of travel photography (destination wedding anyone?). My approach to wedding photograph is 1) make amazing images of the client looking beautiful 2) make sure everyone has fun doing it! Each wedding is unique so in addition to the collections I offer, I can also customize a collection designed to meet the couple’s needs. High resolution digital files, canvas prints, and albums are just some of the products that I offer.

How did you get started in the Wedding Industry?
I’ve been doing photography for more than half my life and I was looking for a new challenge. After a lot of soul searching and blog perusing, I decided I wanted to try my hand a wedding photography. So I found someone in need of a second photographer and fell in love with shooting weddings. I love being around happy people of one of the most special days of their lives!

Furthest place and/or interesting place you’ve traveled to while working on a wedding assignment?
Big Sur, California

The craziest thing you’ve ever done to get “THE SHOT”?
Laid down in a huge puddle of mud (wearing brand new pants I might add!) It was at the end of the evening, so I didn’t spend the entire day covered in mud!

What is your signature shot? In other words if someone saw a particular shot they would immediately relate it to your company.
Each couple is unique and I try to create images that express their personalities and capture their emotions and the love that they have each other. That being said I do love a good bit of lens flare!

What are a few suggestions you would make to couples as they are selecting a photographer/photojournalist for their wedding?
Determine where photography falls into your priorities for your wedding and set an appropriate budget. Look at photographers web sites and find a style that appeals to you. Meet with your top three choices and see who you click with in terms of personality. Remember, you’ll be spending 6, 8, or more hours with your photographer on your wedding day so you ought to mesh well with them! Once you hire your dream photographer - trust them to do what they know how to do best - make great photos!

Your thoughts on ‘first look’ photos or bride and groom photos prior to the ceremony?
I adore first looks! I love the intimacy of a couple seeing each other (mostly) alone for the first time on their wedding day! For a couple to actually be able to talk instead of sneaking furtive glances across the alter, it’s something really special. It’s one of many moments throughout the day that I feel so honored to document a couple’s relationship.

Your thoughts on the importance of a coordinator in the vendor team dynamic?
A good coordinator keeps the day flowing smoothly and deflects any stress from the bride and groom. Having that single point person for all of the vendors to liaise with is tremendously helpful!

Something you would like to see couples do more of with their wedding photography?
First looks! It can sometimes be difficult to convince a more traditional couple (or their parents!) to see each other before the ceremony but in addition to being a memorable moment for the couple, it also allows more time (and more relaxed time!) for photos.

What are a few trends and innovations you have seen in the industry?
Photo booths are a bit thing right now and it’s exciting to see where that will go. I love love LOVE! the photo booth that Sasha Souza created that was featured on the Kiss the Groom Blog!

Photography is the only thing I’ve ever wanted to do. In addition to weddings, I also do travel photography and photo editing for magazines. I’m too obsessed with images to do anything else!

What would we be surprised to learn about you?
I hate sea horses. They freak me out. They’re prehistoric and don’t look like they should exist in nature! Kind of bizarre, I know.

Any hobbies or pastimes?
I love to travel - anywhere in the world - and I’m a huge reader! I just finished a book about the history of Chinese food in America.

Hooray! You're Engaged!! Now What? The first steps to take...

First of all: CONGRATULATIONS!!!

As the two of you embark on your engagement period, there are initial steps you can take that will help eliminate the likelihood of making costly mistakes, stress and frustration. These first steps are rather simple ones, but I had to share them with you:

1. Who are you inviting to the wedding? Truthfully, how many guests are on your guest list? Your fiancé's list? Who are the people your parents planned on inviting? You want to know the answer to this question before you pick up the phone and call any venue. Why you may ask? What if you fall in love with a location that can seat 100 people, yet when you complete your guest list you have 200 or more guests? If the venue is not able to expand the space this may become a costly mistake for and your fiancé. If you fall in love with the location, you now have the preliminary list and you can decide who you will remove from your invite list.

Also, once you've compiled the guest list take a second look and ask yourself this question: "Is there anyone that can be removed from the list?" Have your parents ask the same question regarding their lists.

2. Be realistic about your budget. This is a conversation that you, your fiancé and any family members helping to offset the costs of your special day. There is no such thing as "NO BUDGET". We all have a point where we are comfortable of not exceeding. Whether your budget is $10,000, $30,000, $100,000 that number needs to be clear. Once you've set your budget ask your self could you comfortably add 15% to that amount without being in a pinch. If not, reevaluate your budget or reduce your guest list. Realize that certain expenses are not going to change regardless of your guest list. The expenses that will remain the same are your: Photography, videography, your attire and rings. Every other expense may be effected by your guest list.

3. What date or dates are you considering for your wedding? Do they fall around a major holiday? Also look at whether they fall around a big event date in your area. Are they prime dates for the period in which you are planning your wedding? Having the wedding around a holiday is a great idea in that it may permit an extra day or two for traveling, however, remember that the travel costs (air, gas and hotel) may be higher and depending upon the holiday it may effect certain costs for your wedding (i.e. floral).

4. Consider hiring a wedding planner or coordinator. I've differentiated the two because based on your planning needs you may feel you need a planner vs. a day of coordinator. Realistically consider the time and effort it will take for you to plan this wedding. Be honest with yourselves and ask: Are you detail oriented? Task oriented? Are you great with managing your time? Look at your time and consider your career, educational or family responsibilities. How will planning a wedding add to that mix? Do you want to be consumed with wedding details day and night or do you want to have some free time in the planning period to focus on you, your fiance and the marriage?

After you've considered the time and effort. Think of the expertise, knowledge and resources an event professional brings to the table. A planner provides you with the knowledge and resources needed to execute your event the way you've envisioned it. A planner will also save you time because they will be able to analyze your expectations & needs and recommend the event professionals that are best suited to plan your event. Once the wedding day arrives, that planner will be able to manage the day while you, your fiancé and your families focus on enjoying the day and making great memories. A 'day of' coordinator will be able to tie up the loose ends and help finalize the details for your wedding. Just as the planner, the coordinator will manage your wedding day and give you the peace of mind that the details are being attended to. While interviewing planners or coordinators, you will begin to understand the difference in the services and the level of involvement they can provide.

5) HAVE FUN!! Your engagement period is such a special time in the planning process. You've built the foundation for your marriage and this is the time to add the additional blocks that will make your relationship stronger. Planning a wedding may become stressful and it is important to always go back to the basics: YOUR LOVE FOR THE OTHER. Many of you may jump head in and start planning, and there is nothing wrong with that, however also remember to take the time to enjoy the engagement period and have fun. Build in time for special dates, outings and quiet times where wedding matters or not discussed!

Take some time for the two of you...after all it is your engagement period, right?

Real Wedding: Valerie & Casey 11/7/2009

The great thing about planning a wedding is it gives you an opportunity to spend time with your loved ones and it gives you an opportunity to look at the traditions that make your family who they are. Such is the case with Valerie and Casey. Casey's Greek heritage was a focal point in the planning of their wedding day. Valerie and Casey's mother, Aris, incorporated so many wonderful details that it only ensured that the day was going to be spectacular.

On Saturday morning, we picked up the special Greek cookies that the mother of the groom baked with her friends in the days before the wedding and we were off to a memorable day! Our groom, who is a semi-pro golfer kicked his day off with a round of golf at his home club as our bride and her attendants began their day of preparations at their new home.

Below are a few of the photos from the day. Christopher Smith from SNAP Photography truly captured the essence of the day.

The church is just breathtaking. The ceiling of the sanctuary had the most breathtaking reliefs depicting various religious scenes.

The Orange Tree Golf Club. Tommy with Greenery suggested beautiful fall colors for the centerpieces. As favors, each guest had a box of jordan almonds placed on their dinner napkin, another Greek wedding tradition. The almonds were prepackaged in great boxes that coordinated with the colors of the wedding.

With it being the fall and very close to winter, the sun set as the ceremony ended, that did not deter our couple from getting that 18th Hole shot.

Of course this wedding would not have been what it was without the fabulous wedding vendors that were an integral part of the day. Our vendor team:

Coordinator: Joie de Vie Weddings & Events, Inc. 407-296-4008. A special thank you to my staff, Arlene & Naomi. Ladies, as usual you were fantastic and the family raved about both of you all night.

Ceremony: Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Greater Orlando 407-331-4687. Fr. Constantine and his staff at the church were ready and willing to help the day go smoothly. The church in itself is breathtaking and the artwork is incomparable.

Reception Venue: Orange Tree Golf Club 407-351-4041. Ken Rowland and staff were truly exceptional. This location is a hidden gem in central Florida. They were able to create a custom menu that could accomodate vegetarians, like our bride, along with traditional greek dishes that were crowd pleasers. The club was truly transformed to make the night an unforgettable one for our couple.

Floral/Décor: Greenery Productions 407-363-9151 X308. An Eye for detail is truly what takes and ordinary event to an extraordianry one. Tommy Murphy of Greenery has that EYE! The mother of the groom raved all night about how the wedding florals and decor were just perfect and truly distinctive.

Entertainment: D Street Entertainment (DJ Manoli) 727-443-0296. DJ Manoli had the crowd on the floor the entire evening. From the standards, to the traditional Greek dances and the crowd pleasers all in attendance had something played for them.

Photo: Snap Photography 407-496-4333. Christopher's photos say it all. A great photographer that braved the darkness of the golf course to get that 18th hole shot for our couple, need I say more? Seriously, this was our first time working with Christopher and we loved the fact that he was truly accommodating to the bride and groom's requests.

Video: A Moment To Remember 407-489-3037. One of our favorite videographers! Jim was great to work with and was a great source for providing us back up lighting on the 18th hole for what I truly believe is the signature shot for the wedding. We can't wait to see the final video.

Transportation: Mears Transportation (407) 839-1570. Mears sets the standard in Central Florida for transportation, so we knew that the service would be exceptional. Ironically our driver for the day, Steven K., is also one of Valerie's patients at the dental office she works at...small world indeed!

Cake: Party Flavors 407-578-2082. Only one way to describe the cake: De-Li-Cious! Priscilla's team created a simple yet beautiful cake that fit Valerie's style and it was a show stopper at the reception.

Make-Up: Lena G Creative Design 407-218-0505. When it comes to make-up, Lena and her team are the best that central Florida has to offer. From high fashion to bridal, Lena has worked with the best in the industry. Lena was able to accommodate the bride's make up needs because Valerie is highly allergic. Because Lena's a leading industry expert, she was able to recommend products that would not effect Valerie's allergies and would keep her looking flawless the entire day and evening.

Hair: Tega Rice 407-697-5386. Tega was awesome in incorporating a style that fit each of the ladies personality and facial structure. At the end of the night, their hairstyles were as beautiful as they ahd been in the beginning of the day.

Imagine how we felt when at the end of the night their parents remarked that the day was perfect! Happy Planning!

Tell us a little about your business and the services you offer:
Our style is always evolving, and can be described as a mix of fashion and photojournalism. Our 2 main objectives are equal: 1. Creating amazing images and 2. Giving each client the best experience and custom service possible. We offer custom wedding packages that can include 2 photographers, albums, canvas prints etc, as well as intimate boutique coverage to allow for the same creative work for a smaller setting.

How did you get started in the Wedding Industry?
6 years ago I went on a mission trip to the Philippines and became kind of the "group photographer" after that I feel in love with capturing the beauty and heart of people. Some of my friends really encouraged me to do it more so I started working with a photography company in Chicago and got into doing weddings and loved it. When we moved to Tampa about 2 years ago I decided to put it out there and see where it went and it totally took off! I'm so blessed to have found what I love and be able to use the talent that God gave me.

What professional/industry organizations are you a member of?
National Association of Catering Executives, Professional Photographers of America, Tampa Chamber of Commerce

Any industry awards or recognition? Wedding Wire Top Rated Vendor. We also have two weddings airing on two networks next year on MTV (airing on January 18, 2010) and WE TV (airing in April of 2010)!

Furthest place and/or interesting place you’ve travelled to while working on a wedding assignment?
So far Jamaica which was amazing!!! Next year Playa Del Carmen for a wedding and Trash the Dress session in the caves on the ocean.

The craziest thing you’ve ever done to get “THE SHOT”?
Two places come to mind, wading in a alligator infested pond, and climbing on top of a van.

What is your signature shot?
In other words if someone saw a particular shot they would immediately relate it to your company: Well there isn't really one shot I do the same at each wedding. The best way I can describe it is that my goal is to capture amazing images that are beautiful on their own but also ones that can tell a story when they are laid out side by side or in an album.

What are a few suggestions you would make to couples as they are selecting a photographer/photojournalist for their wedding?
I always tell brides the most important thing is that they really connect with their photographer and love their work. The photographer is going to be there from before the bride has her dress on until the party is winding down and it's so important for the couple to feel comfortable with that person and trust that their guests will as well.

Your thoughts on ‘first look’ photos or bride and groom photos prior to the ceremony?
I really enjoy doing "first look" photos because you capture the first time a bride and groom sees each other in private and they actually have a few minutes to react and live in that moment. It's most likely the only time they will have by themselves until they leave for the honeymoon:-)

Your thoughts on the importance of a coordinator in the vendor team dynamic?
Having a good coordinator is a crucial part of the success of a couple's wedding day. If a couple doesn't have one I always explain the importance of having a professional coordinator for at minimum, day of. The coordinator is the one who works with all the vendors and details so the bride and groom can enjoy their special day. I have my own business, but at each wedding I work with the other vendors as a team and the coordinator is the point person that makes it happen and brings everything together so make it a success.

Something you would like to see couples do more of with their wedding photography?
Allow for more time between the ceremony and reception for pictures of them because this is the happiest point and my favorite part to photograph, right after the wedding they just got married and are so happy!

What are a few trends and innovations you have seen in the industry?
Lighting and draping has really started to get more popular and it really creates an ambiance and unique feel to the reception. I see brides now really want to create something that is unique and are adding things like expresso bar or photobooth as well.

Are you a blog reader? If so, what are your three favorite blogs besides the Joie de Vie blog?
Of course Joie de Vie:-) I blog a lot myself and also try to keep up with others, especially photographers because that is where I get inspiration from when I need some creativity! Here's the 3 I have been watching lately: Kiss The Groom, Skog As In Vogue and the Ben Chrisman Blog.

If you weren't a working in this industry, what field would you be in instead? Why?
I would probably still be in the corporate world traveling and consulting like I was doing before getting into photography. Although, if I could choose any job I would love to host "World's Best" on the travel channel.

What would we be surprised to learn about you?
I have an engineering degree from Purdue University and prior to photography I was an Industrial Engineer for 6 years doing different things from logistics to internal consulting. It's funny because people usually do a double take when I tell them that:-)

Any hobbies or pastimes?
My favorite things to do are outside, so I'm so glad we moved from Chicago to Tampa! Water Skiing, wakeboarding, running - and my latest thing is training for the Disney Marathon coming up Jan 10th!

Engagement Shoot: Valerie & Casey

Boy meets girl, boy likes girl...they fall in love & they're getting married! What a simple yet beautiful equation.

I am looking forward to our wedding this weekend with this lively couple. Valerie and Casey are fun, loving and hilariously funny. Their families are the sweetest people in the world and I'm looking forward to this weekend. Tommy Murphy (Greenery Productions) recommended our services to this lovely couple as they finalized the fabulous details for their wedding day. Valerie & her future Mother-In-Law (Mama Aris as Valerie affectionately calls her) planned many of the beautiful details.

I was privileged to get a sneak peek of Valerie's gown yesterday and all I can say is BREATHTAKING!

We are a full service floral design company, specializing in events and weddings. How did you get started in the Wedding Industry?
I left a job after nine (9) years having developed the floral design department of this company single handedly to strike out on my own and began wedding floral design at my in-home studio. Through word of mouth the business has grown steadily to the thriving sought after company that we are today.

Furthest place and/or interesting place you’ve travelled to while working on a wedding assignment?
This summer we travelled to Hammock Dune (Palm Coast) for a wedding at this exclusive resort community. In 2006 we travelled to Paradise Island for a 6 day event at Atlantis Resort for a corporate event. We travel to Tampa on a regular basis for weddings and corporate events as well as Jacksonville, Palm Coast and South Florida.

What are a few suggestions you would make to couples as they are selecting a florist/floral designer for their wedding?

While price is always a high priority sometimes a low price on wedding quotations can come with a high price for the end result. I suggest that couples look for a certified designer who has longevity in the industry and can provide a consistent level of service to ensure there are no worries on your wedding day. Deal with a vendor that has been recommended by friends and/or colleagues that have provided good service and quality product.

What are a few trends and innovations you have seen in the industry?
“Traditional” weddings don’t really exist anymore, each couple should be able to get what reflects their desires and style for both ceremony and reception. There are so many new elemental products on the market these days to accomplish the trend of minimalist design for the hip, young and sophisticated couples of today such as rhinestones, crystals, diamantes, and wire just to name a few.

What are some of your favorite "reads" for all things floral?
I am an avid subscriber to industry magazines like Brides and Blooms, Flowers &, Fusion Flowers, Florists Review, and various bridal magazines.

If you weren't a working in this industry, what field would you be in instead? Why?
I think I would work as an interior designer. The creativity of putting together designs whether for the home or office through the use of colors, texture and other elements to marry a space with the client’s vision is a wide open door. Your success is directly measurable by the client’s satisfaction with the end product.

What would we be surprised to learn about you?
When I have a quiet moment and nothing else to do I love to draw and I’m a bit of a dare devil; i.e., sky diving.

When not working on a wedding, what are your favorite pastimes?
Rest and relaxation on the beach or a remote island, music and design.
