Newly Engaged? Now What?

First of all CONGRATULATIONS!!!  This is going to be one of the most exciting times for you!  Take the time to layout a great plan so that you can eliminate the chances of making mistakes that will financially impact you, cause you to become frustrated or stressed out.  A wedding is not a theatrical production, it is a symbolic event that represents the two of you becoming one unit.  Here are a few tips to help kick start your planning:

1. ENJOY THE MOMENT!  Let your close friends and family members know of your engagement.  Immediate questions are going to come up about what is your date etc. Just say, 'We have not decided on that, we are enjoying the moment'.

2..Have the engagement ring insured!  Call your homeowners/renters insurance and have your ring insured. There are different options to consider regarding the insurance (that's another blog post because there are so many specifics); typically you can have a supplemental policy through your homeowners/renters insurance or you can get a special policy for the ring (because of value).

3. Who are you inviting to the wedding? This will be a time of celebration and we naturally want everyone to revel in it.  Truthfully, that may not be feasible.  How many guests are on your guest list? Your fiance's list? Who are the people your parents plan on inviting? You want to know the answer to this question before you consider looking for space and planning the wedding.    Also, once you've compiled the guest list take a second look and ask yourself this question: "Is there anyone that can be removed from the list?" Have your parents ask the same question regarding their lists.

4. What is your financial commitment to the wedding? Notice I did not just call it a budget. This is a conversation between all of the financial players (payers) for your wedding day.  So it may include you, your fiancĂ©, your parents and other family members. There is no such thing as "NO BUDGET".  Whether your budget is $15,000, $40,000, $100,000 that number needs to be clear. Once you've set your budget ask your self could you comfortably add 15% to that amount without being in a pinch; also, if a financial payer can't come up with their promised funds...what does that do to your budget?  Based on the answer of the last question reevaluate your budget or reduce your guest list. Realize that certain expenses are not going to change regardless of your guest list. The expenses that will remain the same are your: Photography, videography, your attire and rings. Every other expense may be effected by your guest list.

5. What date or dates are you considering for your wedding? Do they fall around a major holiday? Also look at whether they fall around a big event date in your area. Are they prime dates for the period in which you are planning your wedding? Having the wedding around a holiday is a great idea in that it may permit an extra day or two for traveling, however, remember that the travel costs (air, gas and hotel) may be higher and depending upon the holiday it may effect certain costs for your wedding (i.e. floral).

6. Consider hiring a wedding planner or coordinator. There is a difference between the two and depending on what help you want with the wedding planning will indicate which service works best for you. Realistically consider the time and effort it will take for you to plan this wedding. Be honest with yourselves and ask: Are you detail oriented? Task oriented? Are you great with managing your time? Look at your time and consider your career, educational or family responsibilities. How will planning a wedding add to that mix? Do you want to be consumed with wedding details day and night or do you want to have some free time in the planning period to focus on you, your fiance and the marriage?

After you've considered the time and effort. Think of the expertise, knowledge and resources an event professional brings to the table. A planner provides you with the knowledge and resources needed to execute your event the way you've envisioned it. A planner will also save you time because they will be able to analyze your expectations & needs and recommend the event professionals that are best suited to plan your event. Once the wedding day arrives, that planner will be able to manage the day while you, your fiancé and your families focus on enjoying the day and making great memories. A 'day of/month of' coordinator will be able to tie up the loose ends and help finalize the details for your wedding. Just as the planner, the coordinator will manage your wedding day and give you the peace of mind that the details are being attended to. While interviewing planners or coordinators, you will begin to understand the difference in the services and the level of involvement they can provide.

6. Start thinking of the design and look for the wedding! What are your preliminary thoughts of what your wedding will look like?  Consider you and your fiance's likes and dislikes.  Did you notice I keep saying you and your fiance?  Because it is about both of you.  Look at a few wedding magazines, online blogs and wedding website for inspiration.

7. Have a way to organize your thoughts/inspiration! For the most part we are all very tech savvy.  Most of us have an I Phone, I Pad, Tablet or an Android phone.  There are so many wonderful wedding planning app's to organize your thoughts.  PINTEREST is probably one of the greatest tools at your disposal.  Pinterest is a  two-year-old social bookmarking site.  It lets you collect and share things you like.  You get to create a virtual pinboard of all of the things that inspire you for your wedding.  If you don't care for the electronic storage, you can also create a binder with clips you find interesting.  Either way your inspiration photos should go with you to all of your appointments.

8. HAVE FUN!! Your engagement period is such a special time in the planning process. Pace yourself with what will be taking place.  It's a day for the two of you to express your love, show your personality.  Planning a wedding may become stressful and it is important to always go back to the basics: YOUR LOVE FOR THE OTHER.

Build in time for special dates, outings and quiet times where wedding matters or not discussed!  Have BALANCE and have fun! Take some time for the two of you...after all it is your engagement period, right?

The Fall 2012 Fashion Color Report: The Magic of Color

Fashion week kicked off yesterday in New York! It will be a great week of seeing new trends, colors and ideas for our wardrobes this fall.  With Fashion week comes the report we typically wait for: The Pantone Fashion Color Report!  The Pantone Color Institute will typically survey the designers of New York Fashion Week and designers from all over the world to bring you the season’s most important color trends. The fall report was released and it previews the most prominent hues for fall 2012.

In our wedding world, the Pantone Color report is essential in determining many of the colors you will see in bridal wear for your attendants!  I love the report because it helps our couples think of non traditional color pairings when designing the look of their most important day.  We have reported the new colors every season and were delighted to see some of the suggested pairings from many of our most noted designers.

As the report states:

The Fall 2012 report is titled the Magic of Color!  From love potions and the magical hour of sunset to witches and warlocks, fantasy and illusion are inspiring designers this fall season. With an unexpected mix of darks, brights and neutrals, they cleverly manipulate reality to transport consumers to an enchanting place, free from the stresses of everyday life.
“By playing to consumers’ practical side with versatile neutrals, and boosting their confidence with bold, spirited hues, this skillfully balanced palette has something for everyone,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®.

The list above represents the full color list as well as the Pantone and CMYK codes to get the perfect match for the colors (awesome when designing your stationery suite).  Remember the Tangerine Tango is the 2012 color of the year! My favorites are the Rhubarb, Rhapsody, Sea Fog and the Bright Chartreuse.  The mix of vibrant colors will surely make your fall wedding an unforgettable one!

If you would like a full copy of the report contact us and we will gladly email it to you or if you prefer, you can download it here.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday 2012

Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step. - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr..

Wishing everyone a wonderful MLK holiday!  Our offices are closed today, however, we wanted to take a moment to remember the gentleman above who along with many others changed the infrastructure of our civil rights system!  I always like to remind myself that we stand on the shoulders of giants!
One of my many favorite quotes from Dr. King:
Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable... Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals. - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Pantone Reveals Color of the Year for 2012: Tangerine Tango

Last week Pantone announced its 2012 color of the year! the color is Tangerine Tango!  Pantone describes Tangerine Tango as "a spirited reddish orange that provides the energy boost we need to recharge and move forward."  Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute® describes the color as:
“...sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it. Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.”
With the color orange growing in popularity and acceptance with both consumers and designers. Tangerine Tango will be appealing in fashion, cosmetics and design; these three elements being are an integral part of wedding planning process! We are certain you will see that translate to all things weddings over the next year!

Are you incorporating this beautiful citrus hue into your color palette?  We would love to see how you will use it.  We have seen the orange paired with blue (a la Florida Gators) with one of our former brides as well as with gold and brown.

Wedding Guest Etiquette: Your Mother, Your Boo & Your Friend Too!

It has been INTERESTING as our clients have received RSVP's for all of their upcoming nuptials the last few months. We were amazed at how many of the brides have had to gently turn down invited guest's attempts to add uninvited guests to their wedding guest list.   One of our recent couples had to turn down a guests request to bring along their mother, friend and a new boyfriend.  Remember this is an intimate moment for the couple; as someone they love and cherish, you have been invited to bear witness and be a part of that day.  Be mindful of that and RSVP for the persons listed on the envelope only.

Remember there are a variety of expenses associated with a wedding or special gathering.  To  accommodate your request they are taking on additional expenses for someone they don't know.  Not to mention, you have placed the couple in an uncomfortable position to have to call you to let you know your extra uninvited guests will not be able to attend.  It's not just the cost of the food to the couple, but the additional chairs, linens, favors and alcohol.  Another factor to consider is the venue or locale may be restricted on the number of people they may have or their funds may be limited or committed to other expenses as they start their marriage.  Not to mention many couples trim off family members and other dear friends...yet, you want to impose a stranger on them so that you can bring along someone you may be familiar with? Instead look at the wedding as an opportunity to meet new people, make new friends and share in a very special time for your friend.

Until next time,

Real Weddings: Cynthia & Paul 09-11-2010

Last summer, we received a call as we were traveling to South Florida for the 4th of July holiday. Cynthia and her fiance, Paul, were planning their wedding and hoped to get married on the beach in September. After reading our blog, Cynthia had fallen in love with Costa d'Este Beach Resort and was determined to have her destination wedding there. With one phone call, their location was secured and planning began for their ultra chic and uber sophisticated beach side wedding for Saturday, 09/11/10.

Costa D'Este sits on beautiful Vero Beach.  The hotel is owned by Grammy Award winning artist, Gloria Estefan,  and is really a South Beach meets the Hamptons type of location.  The great thing about the ballroom at Costa is it has beautiful built in LED lighting and glass chandeliers that resemble air bubbles under the ocean.  Our floral designer Andres Aguilar, with Mystique Flowers, incorporated seashells, hydrangea, orchids and lily's to create a chic beach event!  With 40 of their closests friends and family, the weekend was an unforgettable time filled with great food, dancing and ambiance.  We had many favorite moments during this wedding weekend.  The day started with a seaside ceremony and guests went on to enjoy some cuban flair during cocktail hour.  The dinner reception was held in the ballroom with tableside ordering which meant guests did not have to pick an entree before the wedding day.

With the help of Solutions Bridal, Cynthia was able to find a dress that would be available within the 2 month time frame we were working in.  Here are a few photos from the day. Our wedding team included:
The newlyweds right after the ceremony.

The wedding cake with a beautiful beach cake topper.

The bride in our cocktail hour area.  The crystal curtain was a great divider for the space.

The reception!  Large seashells and starfish were incorporated into all of the pieces.

The wedding invitation was a message in a bottle.  Hand calligraphed escort cards were inserted into cut seashells.
We were truly touched when we read Cynthia's review of our services on Google:
"Kerline was the backbone behind our wedding. It went perfectly and not many
couples can say that about their wedding. She went above and beyond to ensure
everything went smoothly. It was as if she was psychic and knew what would
happen before it happened and was prepared for it.

We're glad we hired a
professional, definitely worth the investment. She is everything you want in a
wedding planner. " - Cynthia and Paul
One thing we never forget is whose day it is...the bride and the groom's! To see more photos from this wedding, visit our Joie de Vie page on Facebook for more photos from this wedding.
